Summer Play Dates for Incoming Kindergarten and Pre-K Families

Three informal play dates are planned this summer at John Muir Elementary School and we hope you can join in! This will be a great opportunity for students and families to meet and start getting to know each other. All play dates will take place in the kindergarten play yard, which is at the front of the school on Claremont Avenue. Feel free to bring a snack to share. Please note that there is a chance the building will be locked, so we suggest you use a restroom before coming to the school.

The three dates/times are:
1. Saturday, June 29th from 1-3 pm
2. Sunday, July 14th from 1-3 pm
3. Saturday, August 10th from 10-noon

No formal RSVP is necessary -- we hope to see you there!

Stock up on Berkeley Bowl and Peet’s Cards This Friday

This is your last chance to stock up on scrip for the summer! Buy Berkeley
Bowl and Peet’s scrip cards from the John Muir PTA this Friday, June 7 at
morning drop-off (8:45- 9:15 am) near the school entrance. It works just like
a gift card. A small percentage of the cards sold will go to the PTA to
support various school activities and programs. Berkeley Bowl cards are sold in denominations of $100; Peet’s
cards in denominations of $20. Cash or check gladly accepted. If you don't do morning drop-off on
Fridays, please contact Janice Hui-Rohn at janiceshui@gmail.com to make arrangements.

Your Old Towels and Outgrown Bathing Suits Needed

Please donate your old towels and last year's bathing suits to the Grizzlies Resource Room (G-R-R!) so we can make sure that every John Muir student has the option of participating in Beach Day. There is a green donation bin in the resource room, which is to the right as you enter the Main Office. We’ll also be collecting donations Wednesdays at drop-off and pick-up. Thanks!

Terracycle Contributions Net More Than $400

Thanks to all of your Terracyling contributions this year, our school has made over $400
from just your trash! Plus, we’ve saved a lot of material from the landfill, material that is
being upcycled into consumer goods. Please keep saving your Terracycle items for John
Muir. Sara Kashima will be picking up Terracycle items a few times during the month of
June, and once or twice in July and August. Either drop your items off at the Terracycle
station outside the Auditorium, or save them for when school starts again in the Fall. Remember that we are
now accepting plastic cereal liners and diaper plastics. Please save all of your energy bar wrappers and all of
your personal care products (shampoo bottles, soap dispensers, lotion, make-up containers) as, pound for pound,
those yield the most money back to John Muir. (Please no used dental floss, although dental floss containers are
gladly accepted!).

Please join us in congratulating this week’s Students in the Spotlight (June 3-7):

K: Jahmaya Reyes and Mariah Lillard-Richner
1: Adrian Ramirez, Kaziaha Wheeler, and Jeremiah Harder
2: Amir Jackson and all of Room 5
3: Randell Jackson and Ella Allard-Chigama
4: Elisha Sparks and Jaylen Birden
5: Menelick Reid and Sirriya Croskey

2013 Fall IntraMUIRals Update

The fall IntraMUIRals program is tentatively scheduled to start the week of Monday, September
23. We are hoping to add some new classes in the fall, pending approval by BUSD. Enrollment
in afterschool classes tends to fill up quickly with long wait lists, especially for our art, drawing
and ceramics classes. The IntraMUIRals program is led by parent volunteers, and we need your
help. If we can get volunteers to help with the IntraMUIRals program, we will be able to expand
the number and variety of classes that are offered. In order to encourage parent participation,
volunteers will now get priority enrollment for their children. We particularly need parent volunteers to escort
students from their classrooms to their afterschool classes the first week of intraMUIRals, Mon Sept 23 through
Fri Sept 27, 2:15-3:15 pm—just a one-hour time commitment! Other volunteer responsibilities to do from home
include: creating emergency contact information rosters (2 hours, the week of September 19); creating rosters
for Kids in Motion, BEARS, and the teachers (2 hours, the week of September 19); get contracts signed with the
instructor and Berkeley Unified (several hours over the summer); assembling registration packets (2 hours, the
first week of school); e-mailing teachers and afterschool staff on the class rosters (2 hours, the first week of
school). Please contact Sara Kashima (sara.kashima@gmail.com) if you'd like to help with the fall program, or
if you'd like to volunteer for a specific activity.
